Vuh-cation, Vae-cation... Poh-tae-toh, Poh-tah-toh...

For as long as i remember, the word "vacation" was pronounced, "vuh-KAY-shun".  Of course, that's because the "a" in "va-" seemed like it should be a short "a" sound, not a long "a" (short "a" is pronounced 'ah' whereas long "a" is pronounced 'ay').

Lo and behold, my husband stops what he's doing, looks at me (caringly, i guess), and says, "vey-kay-shun".
so i reponded back, "yes, vuh-kay-shun".

a moment of silence.

Husband:  "vey-kay-shun.  Vay."
Me:  "oh.  vuy-kay-shun.  i mean, VAY-kay-shun."
Husband:  "no, vey-KAY-shun."

and there it is.  i have to remind myself every time i say the word.

personally, i'd rather pronounce it as, "vay-cat-ion". but whatever, English.  you crajee and i may never figure you out.  (why can't English be plain and simple?)

The Avengers

i take pride in the fact that i speak two languages fluently.

no wait, let me take that back. i speak two languages proficiently enough to get by and be laughed at.  and many times, people are too kind to correct me on my pronunciations or usage of the words.

for example, the word "Avengers".

i know the word, "avenge" and i can pronounce it correctly. and putting the "-r" at the end will PROBABLY not change the pronunciation. regardless, it just sounds more appropriate to say, "Eh'-ven-jurz"  than  "uh-VEN'-jurz".  don't ask why because i don't know.

Only after about a year of saying "Eh'-ven-jurz" did my husband correct me on my pronunciation.  

his comment?  "i thought you were just making a joke with the pronunciation this whole time..."

i'm just glad that my hubs speaks gooder engrish.
